Downtown Gananoque is a short walk from the marina and most hotels,
browse for unique foods, distinctive fashions, original art, home
accessories, or a special collectable. In the historic district of
Gananoque, some shops and businesses are housed in restored
buildings dating back to the 1800’s.
Authentic small-town ambiance, shopping and dining can be a way to
treat the senses and enjoy a welcome absence of city hustle and
bustle; and without emptying the pocketbook! Relax at a restaurant
or pub; the atmosphere may be casual and lively or quietly gracious,
but the menus and styles are varied and tempting. The charm and
aromas in the bakery offers irresistible goodies and fresh bread,
while small boutiques and variety shops and the general store and
old-fashioned hardware store offer an enjoyable way to tour the town
and mingle with the locals.
Visitor accommodations are nearby and within walking distance of the
downtown. Many events liven each season in Gananoque including,
JazzFest, an Antique & Classic Car show, "Chalk The Walk" a
sidewalk chalk art festival, Heritage Days weekend, Ribfest,
Motorbike Rally, live theatre, street fairs and buskers

1000 Islands Pond Hockey & Pond Curling Championships
In Gananoque, Ontario at Pondapalooza
“Real
Fans Play Outdoors”
On February 17-19, 2012, in the heart of the 1000 Islands, the 1000
Islands Pond Hockey Championship and Pond Curling Championships will
unfold on the beautiful St. Lawrence River. Teams from across the
province will descend on the Gateway to the 1000 Islands, Gananoque ON,
to experience both hockey and curling ‘in the raw’ on the St. Lawrence
River.
What a stellar opportunity to get away with your
friends, family and teammates to enjoy our Canadian Sports "Pondapalooza"
style while experiencing the fabulous and famous Gananoque
hospitality on Family day Weekend.
In addition to the fast 4 on 4 pond hockey that will be played in
the traditional pond hockey style format with no goalies and using
nets that are only 6ft long x 10 inches high, the 1000 Islands Pond
Curling action will also be exciting as the uniqueness of mother’s
nature ice will keep the experienced and non-experienced curlers
guessing throughout the weekend. This winter weekend will offer a
lot to do for everyone including a Gigantic Christmas Tree Burn &
Family Hot Chocolate Night, Molly’s Chip Truck, Family Skating,
horse drawn wagon rides, full on family events, specials at all
downtown shops and fabulous accommodations, dining and festivities
throughout the entire small town. The Pook Toque team will be back
as part of the Vendor’s Village to introduce the latest Canadian
craze to our little town. Now just like Justin Beiber, everyone can
don one of these amazingly versatile and totally cool hats.
New events this year will include Findlay Foods Taste of
Gananoque that will feature local restaurants best stews, soups or
chili’s and for $2 patrons can sample these creations while raising
funds for the Gananoque Food Bank. The Kingston Running Room will be
organizing a Freeze Your Buns 1km and 5km Fun Run which is suitable
for people of all ages and fitness levels and part of the proceeds
will go to the Gananoque Food Bank as well.
The Gananoque Brewing Company has joined in the fun and will be
running the Gananoque Brewing Company Ice Bar this year and will be
offering their spin and ever popular local beers for spectators and
players.
And Redmond Realty will be hosting the 1st
Annual Kids Ice Fishing Derby for children
aged up to 12 years old. This event is intended to introduce
children to the experience and fun of ice fishing and is free of
charge to participate.
The Cabaret Comedy Collective and the Gananoque Curling Club are
especially excited about their February 19th show. As a wind-up to
Pondapalooza on Sunday night from 5 ‘til 8, expect a full 3 hours of
entertainment honoring all the sports we love (or love to hate)!
There is a charge for this and it is recommended that tickets are
purchased in advance.
The excitement generated by these unique activities is bringing
in hockey celebrities for the Alumni Pond Hockey Challenge with NHL
favorites such as Rick Smith, Brad Marsh, Corey Foster, Shawn Rivers
Outdoor curling rinks plus huge Christmas tree burn,
plus hockey the way it was intended (on a pond) equals way too much
fun in the 1000 Islands. This is a participation and viewer weekend
with curling, hockey, ice fishing, vendors with steaming cups of cocoa
and crispy chips and celebrities jockeying for their turn on the
multiple ice pads carved out of the St. Lawrence River. Plan way ahead
and bring your entire family to Pondapalooza, 2012.
