Town of Gananoque, The town's name is pronounced "Gan-A-Nock-way" and is an aboriginal
name which means town on two rivers. Known to the traveling public as 
"The Town Where The Gates Are Always Open," visitors receive a 
unique and friendly welcome from massive gateways at each entrance to the town.
The Indians called the 1000 Islands "Monatoana," meaning "Garden of the Great Spirit."
Town of Gananoque was first identified in 1686 on Deshaise's chart 
of the St. Lawrence as “Gananocouy”. The town itself was founded by Col. Joel Stone,
one of the many United Empire Loyalists who relocated to 
Upper Canada following the American Revolution.
Town of Gananoque lies along the St. Lawrence River, at the mouth of the Gananoque River. 
Charles McDonald, who built a mill there in 1812 and later laid out the 
town site.

The Bicentennial of the War of 1812 will be here in 2012! To help celebrate this milestone, we have added this section to the Ontario Festivals Visited website. In this new section we will explain, promote and honour the Ontario War of 1812 Celebrations and the re-enactor who participate in them. The Celebrations begin in 2012 and carry on until 2014. This timeframe parallels the events that occurred 200 years ago.

Gananoque is referred to as the "Gateway to the Thousand Islands," 
which lie next to it in the St. Lawrence River. Local attractions include
Gananoque Boat Line to the Thousand Islands and Boldt Castle, NY, live theatre,
the summer theatre festival of The Thousand Islands Playhouse, the Arthur 
Child Heritage Museum of the 1000 Islands and the OLG Casino Thousand Islands.
The Thousand Islands Playhouse is located in Gananoque 1000 Islands Ontario Canada.

The Frontenac Arch Biosphere Reserve extends roughly 2700 square kilometres in the south eastern portion of the Canadian Province of Ontario.

The Town of Gananoque is fortunate to possess one of the most popular marinas located on the St. Lawrence river.
 The Municipal marina provides 340 slips, both serviced and un-serviced for boats up to 50 ft. in length. 
Transient dock space is also available for boaters visiting Gananoque for the short term.

The 1000 Islands Region is an international tourism destination, encompassing communities on both sides of the US and Canada border along the St. Lawrence River and the eastern shores of Lake Ontario. The region takes its name from the more than a 1000 islands that dot the lake and river along this international waterway. The region extends from Kingston to Cornwall on the Canadian side, and from Oswego to Massena on the US side, reaching inland to the foothills of the Adirondack mountains to embrace the communities that are west and north of the Adirondack Park, in Gananoque, Oswego, Jefferson, Lewis and St. Lawrence.
